14-Year-Old Bitcoin Wallets Spring to Life, Moving $8.69 Billion
Holy crypto comeback! Two Bitcoin wallets, dormant for over 14 years, just roared back to life and shifted more than 80,000 BTC!
Lookonchain spilled the beans: these two Bitcoin (BTC) wallets, untouched since 2011, suddenly transferred 20,000 BTC each. Imagine that—a Satoshi-era holder waking up from a deep crypto slumber to move billions in the king of cryptocurrencies.
It's not the first time we've seen ancient coins from Satoshi Nakamoto's days getting dusted off and moved around.
Bitcoin Whale Wakes Up After 14 Years
These two wallets are just a piece of an epic puzzle. They're part of a gang of eight wallets, all controlled by one early adopter who snagged their BTC back in 2011, before Bitcoin's wild ascent. Lookonchain says two of these addresses got their Bitcoin in April 2011, when prices were a measly $0.78. The other six started holding from May 2011, when BTC was trading at around $3.37.
These coins sat untouched for over 14 years. Back then, the first two addresses' total was around $15,600—now? They're worth over $2.18 billion! The other six wallets have ballooned from $202,000 to more than $6.5 billion. Talk about a crypto Cinderella story!
This Bitcoin OG, holding at least 80,009 BTC—worth a whopping $8.69 billion—woke up after 14+ years of hibernation and moved out 40,000 BTC, valued at $4.35 billion today! This OG's got eight wallets under their belt. Two of them bagged 20,000 BTC back on April 2, 2011, when BTC was just a baby at $0.78. Now? They're worth a mind-blowing $2.18 billion!
80,000 Bitcoin Moved
On Friday, July 4, 2025, these wallets, dormant for nearly a decade and a half, started shuffling their 80,009 BTC around. Two massive transactions of 40,000 BTC each—worth about $4.35 billion—lit up the on-chain data.
The transfers kicked off late Thursday night, and Lookonchain's latest update revealed all eight wallets had come back online, moving out every last bit of those 80,009 BTC. At Bitcoin's mind-boggling current prices, we're talking about $8.69 billion in play!
CryptoQuant says this is the biggest single-day movement for coins over a decade old, ever!
Instead of hitting the exchanges, the BTC was sent to mysterious new addresses, hinting at a possible reallocation. But who knows? These holders might be planning something big, maybe even eyeing a sale as BTC aims for new all-time highs.
And guess what? Amid all this action, Bitcoin's price took a rollercoaster ride, dipping from $110k to $107,600 in just 24 hours on July 4, dragging the rest of the crypto market down by 1.3%.
