Arizona Goes All-In on Bitcoin: First State to Establish a Strategic Reserve!
Legislature Votes to Shake Up State Finances with Crypto
Hold onto your hats, crypto fans! Arizona just blasted into the history books as the first U.S. state to greenlight a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. The state legislature dropped the hammer on Apr. 28, and the crypto world is buzzing.
The Arizona House gave Senate Bill 1025 the thumbs up with a nail-biting vote of 31 to 25. This wild move, spearheaded by Republican Senator Wendy Rogers, is set to rock the state's financial strategy by letting the treasury throw up to 10% of public funds into Bitcoin (BTC). Talk about a game-changer!
But wait, there's more! The legislature also slammed through SB1373 with a solid 37-19 vote. This bad boy's all about setting up a reserve fund with seized assets from criminal cases, but with a twist—it's all about digital assets, baby. Arizona's sprinting ahead, leaving states like Texas and New Hampshire in the dust with these bold moves.
Supporters are stoked, saying a Bitcoin reserve could jazz up state assets, shield against inflation, and get Arizona ready for a blockchain-powered financial future. They're all about Bitcoin's decentralization and fixed supply, calling it a total game-changer over that old-school fiat money.
Now, while SB1025 says Bitcoin's gotta be stashed in a special Federal Reserve account, SB1373 lets the treasurer lend out assets from the fund—as long as they keep the risk low. It's all about playing it smart while diving into the crypto pool.
But hold up, folks—this crypto dream's got a hurdle to clear. Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs is holding all the cards, and she's not playing nice. On Apr. 17, she threw down on X, saying she'll veto every bill until the Republican-controlled legislature coughs up a "serious, bipartisan funding solution" for healthcare for Arizonans with disabilities.
Hobbs called the proposed budget "unserious and a complete nonstarter," pointing out a whopping $122 million funding gap in the state's Division of Developmental Disabilities. She's not messing around.
She hasn't said squat about the crypto bills yet, but her veto threat's got everyone on edge. She's already axed 15 bills in the last few weeks and holds the top veto record of any U.S. governor in 2024. If Arizona's crypto move can make it past Hobbs, it could light a fire under other states to jump on the blockchain bandwagon!
