Wall Street Bouncing Back, Bitcoin Soaring Over $82K Amid Tariff Truce
The US stock market is riding a rollercoaster as Trump hits pause on tariffs, sparking a recovery while Bitcoin skyrockets past $82,000.
Stock indices are clawing their way back from the brink after the US trade war sent investors into a frenzy. On April 11, the S&P 500 surged 43.75 points, a 0.83% jump, hitting 5,531. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq rocketed to 16,555.96, up 168.65 points or 1.02%, and the Dow Jones climbed to 39,910, up 0.80% or 316.40 points.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq's stellar performance shows investors are hungry for risk. That's fueling a crypto comeback too, with Bitcoin (BTC) soaring 4.47% to trade at $82,708. Ethereum (ETH) isn't far behind, jumping 5.68% to $1,587.01.
Bond Market in Freefall as Inflation Fears Mount
But the party's not over yet - stocks took a hit after consumer sentiment figures dropped. The University of Michigan survey clocked consumer sentiment at a dismal 50.8 points, down from 57.0 in March and way below the Dow Jones estimate of 54.6, a whopping 34.2% drop year over year.
Inflation fears are the culprit behind the nosedive in consumer confidence. Year-ahead inflation expectations shot up to 6.7% from 5.0% the month before, leaving consumers sweating over their finances.
The bond market's feeling the heat too, with inflation, trade, and recession worries sending yields on 10-year treasuries soaring to 4.466%. Liquidity's drying up fast, especially for foreign holders spooked by the political and economic chaos under Trump's watch.
"There's a mad dash globally to dump Treasuries and corporate bonds if you're a foreign holder. The world's freaking out because no one knows where Trump's headed next," warns Peter Tchir, head of US macro strategy at Academy Securities.
