CME, Google Cloud Launch 24/7 Tokenized Trading for Capital Markets Pilot

Date: 2025-03-25 16:27:59 | By Mabel Fairchild

CME Group, a prominent derivatives marketplace, has teamed up with Google Cloud to trial asset tokenization and boost capital market efficiency.

Both parties have successfully finished the preliminary integration and testing of Google Cloud's Universal Ledger, a distributed ledger intended for conventional financial institutions.

GCUL is a distributed ledger designed for financial institutions, offering programmable features, simplifying account and asset management, and enabling secure transfers via a private, permissioned network.

Moving towards tokenization

Tokenization is the process of transforming an asset's rights into a digital token on a blockchain or distributed ledger. This method can be applied to various assets, such as stocks, bonds, or commodities, enabling more efficient and secure transactions.

A distributed ledger is a digital transaction recording system where each participant possesses a synchronized copy, enhancing transparency and security.

CME Group to Bring Tokenization Technology to Enhance Capital Market Efficiency Using Google Cloud's New Universal Ledger

This technology aims to simplify processes like collateral management, margin calculations, settlements, and fee payments, supporting the financial sector's transition towards continuous, round-the-clock trading.

CME Group and Google Cloud plan to conduct direct testing with market participants later this year, with the goal of launching new services in 2026.

This initiative reflects a broader trend of traditional financial institutions exploring blockchain technology to improve efficiency and cut costs.
