Crypto Hacker Trolls ZachXBT with Taunting On-Chain Message After Swapping $42.5M in Stolen Coinbase Funds
Hacker's Audacious Move
Holy smokes, folks! The notorious hacker who jacked over $300 million from Coinbase customers just upped the ante! After swapping a cool $42.5 million worth of BTC for ETH on THORChain, this cyber thief decided to taunt the one and only ZachXBT with a brazen on-chain message. Can you believe the guts on this guy?
The Taunting Telegram
ZachXBT, the fearless on-chain investigator, spilled the beans on his Investigations Telegram channel. He spilled that the hacker, who paid off Coinbase customer support to pull off this heist, decided to mess with him directly. The message hit ZachXBT's Ethereum account, and boy, was it a doozy.
The Message and the Mockery
"The threat actor who stole $300M+ from Coinbase users by paying customer support just began trolling me on-chain with this message," ZachXBT declared. The message, sent from an address boldly named Fake_Phishing1158790, dropped a simple yet savage "L bozo" and a link to a YouTube clip of James Worthy puffing a cigar after a Lakers victory. Talk about rubbing it in!
One cheeky user even commented under the video, "Smoking that ZachXBT pack," after being led there by the hacker's on-chain message. The audacity!
The Heist and the Aftermath
This whole saga kicked off when Coinbase fessed up to the data breach on May 15. The hacker, slick as can be, bribed customer support to swipe phone names, addresses, IDs, and all sorts of juicy account data. Coinbase swears it only hit less than 1% of users, but still, ouch!
After booting the crooked customer service workers, Coinbase figured this mess could cost them up to $400 million to fix. The hackers had the gall to demand a $20 million ransom, but Coinbase ain't playing that game. Instead, they're offering a bounty to anyone who can track down these digital bandits.
