Cosmos Team Completes Initial IBC Transfer with Ethereum's Test Network

Cosmos Team Completes Initial IBC Transfer with Ethereum's Test Network

Date: 2025-03-27 11:18:36 | By Clara Whitlock

The team responsible for Cosmos's development has successfully executed the first Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) transaction directly between the Cosmos Hub and Ethereum.

On March 26, Maghnus Mareneck, the co-CEO of Cosmos (ATOM), revealed that they had successfully carried out the first IBC transaction between the Cosmos Hub, the central blockchain of Cosmos, and Ethereum (ETH). This trial is part of a larger upgrade known as Eureka, which is scheduled for release as part of IBC-go v10 later this year.

"Hello world."

This marks the first ever Hub IBC transaction to Ethereum testnet!

After many years of anticipation, IBC is now connecting to every ecosystem.

Cosmos's IBC protocol enables autonomous blockchains to communicate and transfer assets and data among themselves. The protocol was activated in March 2021, following the successful completion of the Stargate upgrade by the development team. Since then, numerous blockchains within the Cosmos ecosystem, including Terra, Osmosis, and Akash, have integrated IBC, allowing for asset transfers and communication between these chains.

The test conducted today is significant because it is the first IBC connection established directly between the Cosmos Hub and Ethereum. However, it is important to note that previous efforts have already connected external blockchains to Cosmos through indirect routes. In April 2024, Picasso Network facilitated an IBC connection between Cosmos and Ethereum, and later between Cosmos and Solana. Composable Finance previously bridged Polkadot and Kusama with Cosmos. The ultimate goal of Cosmos is to establish IBC as a universal standard for blockchain communication.
