Crypto ATM Scams Rip Through Australia: Victims Lose $2.5 Million!
Holy smokes, folks! Crypto ATM scams are blowing up Down Under, and it's getting ugly fast. We're talking about a whopping $2.5 million snatched right out of victims' hands!
Scammers are out in full force, zeroing in on the vulnerable, especially the elderly, and it's a trend that's got everyone on high alert. The latest gut punch? A staggering 15 victims from Tasmania were hit hard, losing an estimated $2.5 million. This bombshell dropped on Friday, June 11, and it's left folks reeling.
According to the Tasmania Police, these victims aren't just out some cash—they're facing "lifelong impact" from these losses. The average age? A whopping 65 years old, with each victim losing around $165,000. And get this—one poor soul was fleeced out of a mind-blowing $750,000!
“In some cases, it delayed retirements,” Tasmania Police Detective Sergeant Turner said, shaking his head. “It meant that victims were forced to sell assets and then become reliant on social services and payments.”
These heartless scammers are pulling every dirty trick in the book, convincing victims to shove cash into crypto ATMs under the wildest of pretenses. The authorities are sounding the alarm, warning that these crooks use threats, intimidation, and the promise of sky-high returns to mess with their targets' heads, often creating a frantic rush to act.
“Common scams these victims were falling to were romance scams and investment scams. Also, government and authority scams, and tech support scams, where you receive a phone call from an agency purporting to be who they’re not,” Tasmania Police Detective Sergeant Turner said, frustration clear in his voice.
Crypto ATMs: The Scammer's New Best Friend
Listen up, because crypto ATMs are becoming the go-to for these shady deals. Once your crypto's sent to a scammer's wallet, it's gone for good—no take-backs, unlike those bank transfers that might give you a fighting chance to get your money back.
Aussie authorities aren't taking this lying down. They've already clocked this nightmare and hit back with tighter rules. Just a week ago, on June 3, Australia slammed down cash limits on crypto ATMs to try and put the brakes on these scams.
And over in New Zealand? They're not messing around either. On June 9, they threw down the hammer and banned crypto ATMs outright. Their mission? To stop crooks from turning dirty cash into crypto quicker than you can say "blockchain."
