3.7 Million Crypto Tokens Bite the Dust Since 2021 - Pump.fun Memecoin Mania to Blame!
Hang onto your hats, crypto fans! A staggering 3.7 million cryptocurrency tokens have gone kaput since 2021, and you won't believe this - nearly half of those meltdowns happened during the wild Pump.fun-driven memecoin frenzy!
Millions of Tokens Crashing and Burning
Yep, you read that right. Millions of tokens have been wiped out since 2021, with a whopping 49.7% of those epic fails happening in just the first quarter of this year alone, according to the brainiacs at GeckoTerminal. And get this - 2024 saw nearly 1.4 million projects go belly-up, making up 37.7% of the total token graveyard. It's like the crypto market's been hit by a meteor shower of token shutdowns over the past two years!
"This sharp decline in token survivability might be tied to the rollercoaster ride the market's been on, especially after Donald Trump's inauguration in January 2025, which sent the crypto world into a tailspin," GeckoTerminal spilled the beans.
Pump.fun: The Token Creation Wild West
But wait, there's more! The number of new crypto projects has been exploding like fireworks on the Fourth of July. Back in 2021, just over 428,000 tokens were strutting their stuff on crypto price aggregator platforms. Fast forward to 2025, and that number's skyrocketed to nearly seven million! The researchers are pointing the finger at Pump.fun, saying it's made creating tokens as easy as pie, leading to a tsunami of meme coins and half-baked projects flooding the market.
Before Pump.fun burst onto the scene in 2024, the number of project failures was a mere drop in the bucket. From 2021 to 2023, failures were stuck in the low six digits, making up just 12.6% of the total token casualties, the data reveals.
GeckoTerminal laid it out for us, saying they call a token "dead" when it's no longer being traded, and they only count the ones that had at least one trade before kicking the bucket.
