Crypto Chaos in Court: Dual National Charged for Funding War with Digital Dough
Russian-British Citizen Faces the Music in London for Alleged Sanctions Breach
Boom! A Russian-British dual national just got slammed with charges for tossing cryptocurrency to pro-Russian militias in the heat of eastern Ukraine, totally trashing UK sanctions in the process.
This fiery saga kicked off as the accused strutted into Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Tuesday, with eyes glued on him for allegedly fueling the flames of conflict in eastern Ukraine with digital cash.
Mikhail Vlasov, a 53-year-old caught in the crosshairs, is now staring down the barrel of eight charges for busting through British sanctions aimed at the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics—those rebel zones deep in the Ukraine-Russia warzone.
But Vlasov? He's not going down without a fight, pleading not guilty to every single charge. They're saying he funneled about £4,000 (that's roughly $5,510) in crypto to these groups, bankrolling their military antics between April 2022 and April 2023. After his courtroom showdown, Vlasov walked free on bail, but he's gotta face the music again later this month.
Prosecutor Anja Hohmeyer dropped a bombshell, revealing that the cash Vlasov allegedly sent was all about arming up. We're talking drones, ammo, weapons, and uniforms for the militia groups rocking it in the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.
"This is about somebody deliberately diving into actions he knows are dodging sanctions, but it's also throwing fuel on the fire of Russia's war machine in eastern Ukraine," Hohmeyer declared, not mincing words.
And get this—Vlasov's case is only the second time someone's been hauled into court in the UK for messing with sanctions tied to the escalating Russia-Ukraine brawl, which went nuclear after Russia's full-on invasion in February 2022.
