Spar Goes Big on Bitcoin: Swiss Store Now Accepts Crypto, Could This Be the Start of a Global Trend?
Hang onto your shopping carts, folks! Spar, the international grocery giant, just threw down the gauntlet in the world of crypto by accepting Bitcoin at a store in Switzerland. This bold move could be the spark that ignites a firestorm of crypto adoption across their sprawling global network.
In a sizzling April 17 LinkedIn post, DFX Swiss, the maestros of crypto-to-cash solutions, announced that the Spar in the buzzing city of Zug is now officially on the radar of BTC Map — the ultimate tracker of businesses worldwide that are diving into the Bitcoin pool. And guess what? DFX Swiss made this happen with their slick new tool, OpenCryptoPay.
"This SPAR location is blazing trails as one of the first supermarkets in Switzerland where you can toss Bitcoin (via LNURL) right at the checkout, all thanks to our revolutionary #OpenCryptoPay solution — an open P2P standard that's changing the game for in-person crypto payments," the company declared with pride.
Get this — customers can now whip out their BTC and pay via the Lightning Network, just by scanning a QR code at the checkout. And in another LinkedIn post, Rahim Taghizadegan, the director of the Bitcoin Association Switzerland, dropped a video that shows just how smooth and easy it is to pay with BTC at Spar. It's like magic!
If this pilot in Zug takes off like a rocket, Spar might just roll out Bitcoin payments across all of Switzerland — or heck, maybe even the entire world. Imagine that! With over 13,900 stores in 48 countries, serving a whopping 14.7 million daily shoppers and employing 450K people worldwide, this could be a game-changer for crypto adoption.
By jumping on the BTC bandwagon, Spar is joining a parade of other supermarket and retail chains around the globe that are either testing the waters or fully embracing Bitcoin payments.
Remember back in 2014 when a Spar in Arnhem, Netherlands, started accepting BTC as part of the "Bitcoincity" initiative? That was just the beginning.
Fast forward to April 2023, and Pick n Pay, one of South Africa's heavyweight supermarket chains, made waves by rolling out BTC payments across all 1,600+ of its stores after a killer pilot program. Just like Spar in Zug, customers can pay using the Lightning Network, and shoppers are reportedly dropping over $50K in BTC every month. That's some serious crypto action!
And let's not forget the big players in the U.S. like Whole Foods and Starbucks, who've been dipping their toes into crypto payments through third-party apps like Spedn, which convert crypto to fiat at checkout. The crypto revolution is spreading, and it's unstoppable!
